International Disaster Risk Reduction Day

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and COPE Disaster Champions celebrated International Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Day, highlighting the importance of ‘Early Warning and Early Action‘, WMO’s 2022 theme. This celebration discussed ways of reaching the youth joining forces.

COPE has worked with WMO since 2020, and since then, WMO has acted as a Scientific advisor on Storm Surges, Volcanoes, Heatwaves and Droughts books. This collaboration has been very fruitful and has led us to great things, such as having the honour to host the Director of the DRR and Public Services Department at WMO, Mr Cyril Honoré, on the panel discussion at the launch of the Volcanoes book at the Youth Forum Preparatory Meeting for the UNDRR GP2022 in Bali.

During this great journey, COPE has recognised the lack of free books or appropriate learning materials for the youth. There is a massive need to promote DRR and reach more children worldwide with COPE’s content and the key DRR messages to empower children to be prepared and provide them with basic DRR to act as role models in their communities.

COP27 – Heatwaves launch!

As we are all working towards the same goal of empowering children and teaching them to be risk-aware, WMO and COPE will launch the new ‘Heatwaves’ book at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, on November 10th, 2022, to educate children on heatwaves and how to be prepared for them. We will keep you updated on this soon!
