Empowering Education on Disaster Risk Reduction: A Passionate and Creative Approach by an educator in Egypt!
With passion and creativity, teachers worldwide can effectively inform children about disaster risk reduction, even with limited resources. All it takes is a genuine passion for education and a willingness to make a difference. Our next COPE Champion is Mona Al-Refai, who has successfully implemented engaging activities in a learning hub for children, positively impacting their awareness of earthquake preparedness.
Mona Al-Rifai is a Syrian teacher and TOT trainer with a Master’s degree. Mona is passionate about voiceovers and hosting an energetic and cheerful podcast. Mona is known as a team-oriented leader with a continuous learning mindset. Since 2020, she has volunteered with CARE and UNICEF and currently manages the Children’s Learning Space in Alexandria, Egypt.
Her enthusiasm lies in creating new educational tools and developing activities that raise children’s awareness. The Learning Space features an educational platform hall equipped with laptops and internet access to help children review their lessons and enhance their digital skills. Additionally, there is a hall for free activities and life skills, including drawing, origami, Lego, cinema, jewellery making, recycling, and more.
Following last year’s earthquake in Syria and Turkey, the COPE Earthquake book was uploaded on UNICEF’s learning passport platform. Based on the story to enhance awareness of preventive measures, Mona utilized a method involving storytelling with a pop-up book she created and a display screen, dividing the children into groups, assigning each group a scene from the story, and having them build it with Legos. Shadowplay was also involved in animating the COPE squad, while earthquake prevention steps were also represented through a video clip at the learning hub.

The learning space caters to refugees of all nationalities, alongside Egyptians. Mona takes pride in being part of a community that aims to educate a resilient generation.
