Teaching Preparedness from Colombia to the Czech Republic

Across the world, educators continue to bring COPE stories to life in creative and meaningful ways. This month, we’re excited to share two inspiring Disaster Risk Reduction activities: one from Colombia and one from the Czech Republic, showing how young learners are engaging with preparedness messages through storytelling, role play, and imagination.

🇨🇴 Colombia – Hurricanes Preparedness in School

The Hurricanes book (Spanish version) was used by kindergarten teacher Gloria Rojas at Marie Poissepin School to help her young students understand how to stay safe during this hazard. Through storytelling and playful activities, the children quickly connected with COPE’s story and learned the key Disaster Risk Reduction message: Stay Safe. This initiative highlights the growing interest among educators in bringing disaster awareness into early childhood classrooms.

🇨🇿 Czech Republic – Flood Preparedness Through Interactive Reading

The Floods book (Czech version) was brought to life by theatre professor Šimon Peták, who led an interactive reading session at Vesna in Brno. Children actively engaged with the story, pretending to move through a flood scenario, and learned the key Disaster Risk Reduction message: Evacuate. This creative approach shows how arts-based activities can help young learners understand and remember essential preparedness actions.

Thank you to the wonderful teachers, collaborators, and community spaces who make these learning moments possible!
