COPE in India

In Dehradun, India, storytelling and community voices are helping children and families better understand and respond to the growing risks of extreme heat.

Words Rhythms Images (WRI), and WRITE Initiatives Trust, in collaboration with the Aryan Group and the Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN), recently led a series of community-based activities exploring how storytelling can support locally led climate adaptation. Over the past 6 months, the project engaged children, teachers, and families from Aryan Group’s learning centres through COPE Disaster Champions books, climate education sessions, and digital storytelling workshops, helping communities reflect on their lived experiences of heatwaves and identify practical local responses.

Using the COPE Heatwaves book in Hindi as a starting point for discussion, children and families shared their experiences and worked together to create digital stories and short community videos. These activities sparked meaningful conversations about heat safety and highlighted practical actions people can take to stay safe during extreme heat. The initiative shows how storytelling can build confidence, strengthen shared understanding, and inspire community-led solutions to climate challenges.

We thank Words Rhythms Images (WRI)Ajay Govind and his team, and partners, Aryan Group, and ADRRN for including COPE Disaster Champions in their outreach and education activities. It is inspiring to see the COPE stories supporting conversations, creativity, and locally led climate action. Keep an eye on this space — WRI is also translating the COPE Heatwaves book into Malayalam, helping bring heat safety knowledge to even more communities!
